From Zero to 10 Pull-Ups: Heinz's Senior Strength Training Story in Cary, NC
Years of running and cycling. Zero strength training. Then he decided to fix that.
Heinz didn't walk into CrossFit Coordinate out of shape. He'd been running and cycling regularly for years. What he'd never done was strength training. As a senior, he knew that gap mattered, so he came to our Cary, NC gym with one clear goal: get stronger without getting injured.

Why a Lifelong Runner Started Strength Training
Heinz's cardio was already in good shape. He was worried about everything else:
I'm a senior and while I've maintained a regular practice of running and cycling over the years my strength training has been zilch. I was concerned about maintaining overall strength, muscle mass, balance, and agility. When I first joined CrossFit I was shocked at how weak and uncoordinated I had become!
We see that surprise a lot, especially from runners and cyclists in Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs. The engine is strong, but strength, balance, and coordination slip away quietly when nobody trains them. Heinz noticed in his first week. Then he got to work.
The "Pet" Goal: How Heinz Improved His Pull-Ups
Every member needs a target. Heinz picked one of the hardest bodyweight movements there is.
One of my 'pet' goals was to improve my pull-ups. After 5 months at CrossFit I went from zero to 10. Nothing to brag about but not bad for an old guy.
Heinz says it's nothing to brag about. We disagree. Plenty of adults at any age can't do one strict pull-up, and he built up to ten in five months.
Strength Training Without Injury, Scaled to His Age
Heinz isn't after a dramatic transformation. He's after steady progress that lasts:
Continuous gradual improvement in strength and agility without injury. Instructors are awesome in making sure exercises are appropriately scaled for my age and ability.
That's what coach-led CrossFit should look like. Every workout is scaled to the person doing it. Heinz shows up, and our coaches take care of the programming, the modifications, and the progressions.

In His Own Words
We asked Heinz what he'd tell anyone thinking about joining. He kept it short:
Give it a shot. Lots of fun!
If His Story Sounds Like Yours...
Maybe you're a runner or cyclist who has never picked up a barbell. Maybe you've noticed your balance isn't what it used to be, or you want to stay strong for the decades ahead and don't want to get hurt doing it. If you're looking for strength training for older adults in Cary or a coach-led CrossFit gym near Apex or Holly Springs, Heinz's story is a good place to start.
You don't need to be able to do a pull-up. Heinz couldn't. You just need to show up, and our coaches will handle the rest. Read more member stories like From Intimidated to Inspired, or and see for yourself.
Heinz, congratulations on ten pull-ups, and thank you for showing everyone it's never too late to get strong. On to eleven.
Senior Strength Training: Common Questions
Is CrossFit safe for older adults?
At CrossFit Coordinate, coaches scale every movement to each member's age, ability, and experience, and progress it gradually. Heinz has built strength for months without injury. In his words, the instructors make sure "exercises are appropriately scaled for my age and ability." If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
Can you start strength training as a senior with no lifting experience?
Yes. Heinz started with no strength training background and couldn't do a single pull-up. Five months of coach-led classes later, he can do 10.
Do runners and cyclists need strength training?
Running and cycling build endurance but don't train much overall strength, balance, or agility. Heinz had run and cycled for years and was still surprised how weak and uncoordinated he felt in his first classes. Strength training filled that gap.
