Why Intensity Matters?
A while back we launched our Consistency Club and we shared an article about Why Consistency is Key? At CrossFit Coordinate, we make consistency as easy as possible with our 24/7 access, personal attention, and effective strength and conditioning workouts designed to get in and out of the gym in less than an hour.
Once you are consistently coming to the gym and getting more proficient, we want to build on that with Intensity. Intensity is a word that scares a lot of people, so let’s dig into it a bit more. When we say intensity, we mean intensity relative to your ability. Our classes have folks have all abilities and exercise experience and we welcome those who have never exercised along with those that have trained for a long time. It’s OK that your intensity may be more or less than someone else’s.
So, Why Intensity Matters? The answer is simple – Intensity drives adaption and results. That is what makes CrossFit so effective in delivering the strength and conditioning improvements that people need. Here’s a great quotation from Greg Glassman (Founder of CrossFit) – “Strength and Conditioning gains come faster for athletes who hold the highest average intensity over sustained periods.”
Intensity can be a scary thing as you push yourself out of your comfort zone. Just remember, intensity differs for everyone and depends on the intended purpose of the workout. Don’t worry you can trust your coaches to help you adjust the workout appropriately to help you get the right level of intensity.
The text below from the CrossFit Journal is a great summary of Intensity. Note that as Intensity increases, comfort decreases. Adaptation will require discomfort and that’s OK! – https://journal.crossfit.com/article/beginners-guide-to-crossfit
“Where functionality defines the CrossFit path, it is intensity that most controls the rate of progress for any particular individual. Intensity is essentially the rate of work or power expressed in completing work. It correlates to heart rate and how quickly you complete any WOD where we’re looking for time to completion.”
